Sea-Doo Losing Power? How to Take a Fuel Sample (Check for Water)

Your Sea-Doo was running perfectly last week, but today it’s a different story. You hit the throttle and instead of taking off, the engine bogs down, hesitates, or stalls completely.

Most riders immediately assume they blew a spark plug or have a massive engine issue. While checking the plugs is never a bad idea, in our experience at the shop, sudden loss of power or rough idling is very frequently caused by one thing: Water in your fuel.

Whether it came from a bad batch of marina gas, a loose gas cap, or heavy condensation during storage, water and modern fuel injection systems do not mix. Before you start throwing expensive parts at the ski, the very first diagnostic step you should take is pulling a fuel sample.

Watch our shop video below to see exactly how we pull a sample in the bay, and then read the step-by-step guide below to diagnose your own fuel quality.

How to Take a Sea-Doo Fuel Sample

⚠️ SAFETY WARNING: You are dealing with raw, pressurized gasoline. Do this in a well-ventilated area outside. Keep all sparks, open flames, and lit cigarettes far away. Wear safety glasses.

Step 1: Get a Clean, Clear Container Do not use an old oil drain pan or a dirty cup. You need a completely clean, clear glass jar or a clear plastic water bottle. You need to be able to hold it up to the light to see exactly what is floating inside.

Step 2: Access the Fuel Line Remove your seats and access the engine compartment. Locate the main fuel feed line that connects to the fuel rail (where the fuel injectors are). Carefully disconnect the quick-connect fitting. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of residual pressurized fuel will spray out when you pop the line off.

Step 3: Direct the Line into the Container Take the disconnected fuel line from the gas tank and point it directly down into your clear container. Make sure it's secure so it doesn't spray across your engine bay.

Step 4: Prime the Fuel Pump (DO NOT START!) You need the ski to pump fuel into your bottle, but you absolutely cannot start the engine. Put your lanyard on the DESS post to wake the ski up. Then, tap the start button for just a split second.

When you wake the ski up or bump the starter, the fuel pump inside the gas tank will "prime" itself for a few seconds, shooting a stream of gas out of the hose and into your bottle. Repeat this once or twice until your clear container is about a quarter full.

Step 5: Reconnect the Fuel Line Once you have your sample, firmly push the fuel line back onto the fuel rail until you hear and feel the quick-connect click securely into place.

How to Read Your Fuel Sample

Now, hold your clear container up to the light and let it sit still for about 60 seconds. Because water is heavier than gasoline, it will always sink to the bottom.

  • ✅ Good Fuel: The liquid should be perfectly clear with a yellowish or amber tint. It should smell like strong, fresh gasoline.

  • ❌ Bad Fuel (Phase Separation): If you see a distinct, clear bubble or a hard dividing line at the very bottom of the bottle, that is water. If the fuel looks cloudy, milky, or smells like stale varnish, the gas has gone bad.

What to Do If You Find Water

If you find water in your sample, do not ride the ski. Pumping water through your high-pressure fuel injectors will rust them from the inside out and can cause severe engine damage.

The only proper fix is to completely drain the fuel tank, flush the fuel lines, and replace the fuel filters.

If you aren't comfortable tackling a tank drain yourself, bring it to the pros. Give Odyssea Jet & Prop Shop a call at (410) 973-2890 and we will get your fuel system flushed, cleaned, and dialed back in so you can get back on the water.
